Description
Plantagenet takes its name not only from its home, but also from its heritage. In 1968, in a stroke of serendipity, English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenets, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire. Now Plantagenet Wines, the winery is located in the heart of Mt Barker township which is 350km south of the Western Australian capital of Perth.
The first vines planted were Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Riesling three years later. The first wines from these young vines were tight and lean, and showed the elegant spice and fruit characters for which this area was to become known. Plantagenet’s 126 hectares of vineyard have been carved out of the region’s distinctive Marri soils, named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum trees that grow here. The combination of these ancient soils and cool maritime climate offers an environment perfect for growing premium wine grapes.
Drop in to the cellar door, where they offer the full range of Plantagenet Wines for tasting.
