Ibuki House Restaurant

Ibuki House Restaurant is a Japanese restaurant in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The casual dining room has touches of Japanese style to create a relaxing ambiance which complements the fresh and intricately prepared food. Owner and Head Chef, Tsukasa Ibuki, arrived in Melbourne in 1962. He was the first trained Japanese chef to come to Australia in the post-war period and spent time at Sukiyaki House before starting his own restaurant and private catering business.

In late 2010, as Chef Ibuki turned over 70 years old, he decided to run a smaller and more manageable operation – a house restaurant converted from his own house garage in Bentleigh East. Despite limited capacity, the restaurant turned out to be a huge success. Customers had to book well in advance to reserve their seats – the wait could be up to two months in peak seasons.

Chef Ibuki is the first chef to introduce the original Omakase concept to Melbourne with great success. Omakase is a Japanese phrase that means “to entrust”. Only chefs with the best skills and confidence would run a restaurant with no “a la carte” menu, but only Omakase Banquet available. The ten course Omakase Banquet enables Chef Ibuki to fully demonstrate his skills and creativities.

In late 2013, Chef Ibuki’s passion for food and desire to impress made him come out of “Ibuki House” and establish a brand new Ibuki House Restaurant in Malvern. Now thanks to the elite team – Chef Ibuki, the master and his two best trained students Kito and Tatsuo, as well as a larger venue, not only can a customer book Omakase Banquet with just a day’s notice, but also an “a la carte” menu is available for those who fancy something lighter than the full 10 course Omakase Banquet.
